Beech Veltman bursary for higher photography education
10 million makers are planting upliftment seeds, we will hand pick 10 strongly determined passionate photographer to join our bursary program.
The programme is designed for self-taught photographers who want to become professional photographers. Graduates will hone their technical skills and learn how to run a business.
The Beech Veltman bursary will build greater capacity, commitment, accountability, and responsiveness in the professional photography field as well as encouraging individuals to follow entrepreneurial careers that uplift themselves as well as their communities.
It is highly competitive bursary, do not be discouraged if you do not make it.
Your commitment
- You will need a digital camera you can use in the classroom, and for homework assignments
- Courses are run once a week, over eight weeks. You need to commit to being at every lesson – and to completing your homework assignments.
- Lessons are in English. You need to be able to speak and understand English so that you can benefit from the lessons and feedback sessions.

Short-listed photographers will be briefed on a separate task.
Who may apply
These are the qualifying criteria:
- Be a self-taught photographer
- Run a part-time or full-time photographic business
- Be between 18-30 on the 31 January 2023
- Live in South Africa
- Not be able to afford to pay for the course
- Be able to speak, read and write English
- Have access to a camera you can use in class and for your assignments.

What we cover
- Course contents, mentoring and tutoring
- Eight hours studio hire for you to prepare your portfolio
- Use of the studio laptop to edit photographs
- We also cover a limited travel allowance for taxis to and from the studio
Our rights to use your work to promote our course
We are proud of the work that our students produce and may share exceptional work online.
- Your rights: credits, captions, and authorial terms for all photographs you take on the course will belong to you.
- Our rights: We have the rights to use your course photographs to promote the course. We will credit you as the photographer.
This bursary cannot be transferred, or exchanged for cash or other credit.
